Needham, Joseph Collection
A British scientist, political activist, and scholar of the history of Chinese science, Joseph Needham (1900-1995) first visited China in 1942 when he established and directed the Sino-British Science Co-operation Office in Chongqing. The 1,183 photographs here come from the collections at the Needham Research Institute, and record his travels in wartime China.
For more information on Needham see the Cambridge Digital Library introduction to the digitised notebooks and photographs http://cudl.lib.cam.ac.uk/collections/needham. The digital copies we have on display here are available in larger format at https://cudl.lib.cam.ac.uk/view/PH-NRI-00002-00010-00001-00001-00001/1. There is much fuller detail there on the photographs and the trips on which they were made.
We are grateful to John Moffett, Library at the Needham Research Institute, for allowing us to incorporate the collection, initially hosted on Visualising China, in Historical Photographs of China.
