Joseph NEEDHAM CH FRS FBA (1900-1995), a British scientist, historian and sinologist, was Director of the Sino-British Science Co-operation Office (SBSCO) in Chongqing from 1942 until 1946.  During this time, Needham made several long journeys in war-torn China, through Sichuan, Yunnan, and other parts of South, Southwest and Northwest China not under Japanese occupation.  He visited universities and laboratories, factories and workshops, meeting people from all walks of life, especially scientists and other academics ­– and took around a thousand photographs.  For more information on Needham see http://cudl.lib.cam.ac.uk/collections/needham (where larger sized images are available to view) and http://www.nri.cam.ac.uk/JN_wartime_photos/home.htm.
