Subject: Born in Edinburgh and educated at Cheltenham College and the universities of Paris and Heidelberg, James Duncan Campbell joined the Chinese Maritime Customs Service in 1870. He became non-resident secretary at London in 1874 and remained there until his death. In 1884 he was sent to Paris by Sir Robert Hart on behalf of the Qing government to negotiate a cease-fire agreement in the Chinese-French War.
