A photomontage of 1,700 Japanese babies, Tokyo

Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: JC-s016. Post card published by M. Sternberg, Hong Kong. The caption on the post card is wrong. Most probably all these babies are Japanese. The photomontage was made in 1893 by Esaki Reiji (1845 - 1910), who had a portrait studio in Tokyo, Japan. Esaki Reiji's famous photographic collage was made for publicity purposes and was entitled: ‘One Thousand and Seven Hundred Children Took Three Years Came to My Shop’ (sic).
