The very popular musical opened in 1899 and toured extensively, playing at the Royal Strand Theatre, London in 1901. It was the first musical to run for over a thousand performances. Picton Roxborough played Hang Chow, Emperor of Ylang Ylang; Fanny Wright and Jessica Lait were Sing Sing and Yen Yen, maids of honour to Soo Soo.
