Henry Norman Bethune (1890-1939) was a Canadian thoracic surgeon who supported the Chinese Communist Party’s Eighth Route Army from January 1938 until he died of blood poisoning on 12 November 1939. Bethune brought modern medicine to rural China and established training for doctors, nurses and orderlies. He is celebrated and honoured in China and Canada. Dr Norman Bethune (白求恩)'s grave and memorial was near the Jinchaji Border Region War Resistance Martyrs' Memorial (晋察冀边区抗战烈士纪念塔).
