Entrance to a row of examination cells

Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: OH04-106. The characters over the entryway are 巨字号 (pinyin: ju zi hao), which is the name for that particular row of examination cubicles. This naming system was derived from verses in the 'Thousand Character Classics' (千字文), a primer designed for teaching Chinese characters to children.  The imperial examination system was abolished in 1905.  See also OH03-013, OH03-014, OH03-015, OH03-016, OH03-017, OH03-028 and OH03-033.
