Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: To-s17. The Lunghua Civilian Assembly Centre (C.A.C.) was an internment camp located on what is now the campus of Shanghai High School. John Christopher Huckstep is the taller teenager in the centre of the photograph, with glasses and a tanned complexion. His father, Herbert Huckstep, ensured that the 350 interned children were taught a wide range of subjects at the school in the camp – the Lunghwa Academy – including using brown paper bags to write on. G.R. Osborn was the headmaster of the well-regarded school. Source: BBC World Service Witness History programme entitled ‘Families interned in WWII China’ - https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w3ct3c2c. Photographer's blind stamp: Oscar Seepol Shanghai. Photograph taken by an Oscar Seepol studio photographer (maybe Oscar Seepol himself?) soon after the relief of the camp.
