Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: VH02-153. Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution reference: L04357-067a. The Rev. Robert Samuel Maclay, D.D. (1824-1907), joint author with The Rev. C.C. Baldwin, D.D. of 'Dictionary of the Foochow Dialect'. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Samuel_Maclay. A name written on the album page beside this photograph, indicating the name of the photographer, appears to be ‘Firmin’. It is tentatively suggested that the name of the photographer is Edward Morris Firmin (partner, Elles & Co., Amoy/Xiamen) or perhaps H.M. Firmin (listed as a clerk at Margesson & Co., Foochow/Fuzhou in 1867). Edward Morris Firmin (1834-1898) was a tea broker, who was born and died in London.
