Digitised from a negative made for a copy print. This is a photograph of hastily erected defences on a ramp (Madao) near the wall of the American Legation. Madao were built on the inside of the city wall for easy access to the top of the city wall for cavalry and soldiers. Gate tower of Zheng Yang Men (Chien Men) is in the far distance, on the right. It was badly damaged in a fire on 16 June 1900. Photograph by Reverend Charles A. Killie. See NA05-26.
