It is thought that the original photograph was once owned by John Barr Affleck (1878-1941), H.B.M. Consul-General at Tianjin, and later belonged to his son John Proctor Affleck (1930-2004) and his wife Elaine. The caption on the back of the copy print was written by Billie Love Historical Collection.
