Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: GJ-s08. Photographers stamp on back of print: AH FONG PHOTOGRAPHER / 27 MAR. 1930 / SHANGHAI. The Long Bar, reputedly the longest bar in the world, stretched 110 feet 7 inches, on the second floor, along the south face of the club building. 'The established taipans, or big bosses, would gather at the end of the bar near the waterfront [on the left of this photograph] whilst newcomers to Shanghai, known as 'griffins', would be relegated to the murky depths of the tavern.'
