View of the new Garden Bridge, from Hongkou, Shanghai

Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: HD-s26.  View of Bund from Hongkou, over Soochow Creek and Garden Bridge, to the Bund.  On the right, the first building is Pustau & Co.  The tallest building on the right (with oval windows and an extension) is the Masonic Hall and Lodge (opened 1867).  The Public Garden is newly laid out on the left, including the first bandstand, which was built in 1868.  This bandstand is not to be seen in photographs taken after 1874.  The round topped pier in Quai de France (seen in HD-s28) is discussed in "Old Shanghai's Bund" by Dennis George Crow (page 27) - this pier dates HD-s26 to the late 1860s to early 1870s.  The garden of the British Consulate is on far right.  See HD-s27, HD-s28, HD-s29, HD-s30 and HD-s32 (which are all details from HD-s26).
