Subject: Frank James Smith entered the Chinese Maritime Customs Service in 1876 as an assistant. He served in various ranks at Shanghai, Ningpo, Tientsin, Kiukiang, Chefoo, and Hankow before being promoted to deputy commissioner in 1898 and commissioner in 1908. He resigned from the Customs Service in 1917. Access to original photographs and albums in the Edward Bangs Drew Collection is restricted.
