University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: JC-s029. Statue of Lu Xun (Lu Hsün; Zhou Shuren) (1881-1936), at his tomb in Lu Xun Park (formerly Hongkou Park), Shanghai. Lu Xun, a celebrated Chinese writer and major literary figure, died in Shanghai, on 19th October 1936, aged 55. Translation of caption on the photograph: "Mr. Lu Xun's grave in Shanghai". Translation of writing on the back of the photograph, addressed to a student whose surname is Wu (吳): "Happy New Year and wishing you good health. Hoping you will become a daughter/son of the nation. I will be waiting for a letter from you, comrade". The writer of the message signed off with the character 海, which means sea.
