Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution reference: L04357-011a. The inscription on the grave is: "IN MEMORY OF GEORGE SMITH WHO DIED NOVEMBER [..]TH 185[.] AGED [..] YEARS / I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live […]". (The latter is a quotation from the Bible - John 11:25-26). This is the grave of George Smith, in Shantung Road Cemetery (which was on Shantung Road between Hankow and Kiukiang Roads and is now the Huangpu District Stadium), Shanghai.
