Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: BL-s089. A modern copy print made by the Billie Love Historical Collection. It is thought that the original photograph was once owned by John Barr Affleck (1878-1941), H.B.M. Consul-General at Tianjin, and later belonged to his son John Proctor Affleck (1930-2004) and his wife Elaine. The caption on the back of the copy print was written by Billie Love Historical Collection. The words "J.B. AFFLECK" had been crossed out. An unidentified man is posed on a wicker chair, with a fan, beside a tea set on a table, and wearing Japanese clothes – a silk kimono and geta. Behind him is a screen and bonsai on a veranda.
