University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Ba-s025. This family group is possibly taken between 1922 and 1924. Bishop Banister retired in 1923, and left China in December 1924. It shows, left to right: Bishop William Banister (1855-1928), son Thomas Roger Banister (1880-1955), who served in China in the Maritime Customs Service from 1913 to 1946, and daughter Maud Violet (1891-1969), who married Norman Lockhart Smith in Jiujiang, China, in 1914. Lockhart Smith (1887-1968) was a colonial official in Hong Kong, and in 1936-41 served as Colonial Secretary.
