Notes

University of Bristol – Historical Photographs of China reference number: HR01-038. The Chinese characters by the doorway, may be translated as 'we as a group, all embraced by graciousness'. William Hoy is on the far right. William Hoy, from Sunderland, sailed for Hong Kong in June 1909. He was a draughtsman at Taikoo Dockyard and Engineering Company. Hoy returned to the UK in September/October 1914 via Canada, presumably to join up. See also HR01-037, HR01-039 and HR01-045 for the same group of friends on an outing.
