Notes
University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Hu01-145. During the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895), H.M.S. ‘Firebrand’ and U.S.S. ‘Petrel’ were sent to protect locally resident Europeans before the river froze and cut them off. Holes were cut in the bank and the ships floated into docks dug ready for them. Water was then run out again and the ships were high and dry. Mud walls were then built around them and the ships thatched over with straw. Note the trees attached to the tops of the masts, indicating Christmas. This photograph was published in the ‘Illustrated London News’, 28 July 1900, and captioned: ‘UNITED STATES AND BRITISH GUN-BOATS IN WINTER QUARTERS AT NIUCHWANG. PHOTOGRAPH LENT BY LIEUTENANT QUAYLE, R.N. The gun-boats in the picture are docked within the European Settlement in mud dock dug in the bund. They are thus protected from the heavy ice-floes during the opening and closing of the river’. See Hu01-027 (crew of HMS Firebrand).
