Notes
University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: JC-149. A pre-decimal British shilling coin, dated 1922, was included in the photograph, giving scale. The diameter of this coin would have been 23.6mm. Approximate size of moth: 113mm (4 7/8") x 90mm (3 9/16"). Caption on the back of the photograph: HMS CUMBERLAND - suggesting that this photograph was collected/owned by a sailor on that Royal Navy ship. Apparently when the ship when moored up river (River Yangtze), large numbers of insects were attracted to it by the lights. See Ep01-258, Ep01-259, JC-s147, Ro-n1006 and Ro-s168.
