Collection

Swire, G. Warren

Identifier

Sw07-109

Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Sw07-109. GW Swire referenced each negative in this album with the prefix G written in India ink. This negative is referenced G77. The album itself has also been archived at some stage with the reference P1/III. The words 'and SAINAM' were added in green biro to Warren Swire's original captions in his negative album 'China B and S, G'. This photograph was probably taken on the Pearl River, off Shameen (Shamian) Island, Canton (Guangzhou).  The Butterfield and Swire steamship 'Sainam'  was on the West River (Xijiang) run, between Canton (Guangzhou) and Wuchow (Wuzhou).  The steamer wharf for this service was apparently right opposite Shameen Island (Shamian Island).
