Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: BL-s094. The paddleboat was photographed from a towed boat. Xiuyi Bridge or Bridge of Embroidered Ripples /Humpbacked Bridge (绣漪桥) is near the south Ruyi gate to Kunming Lake, New Summer Palace, Yiheyuan, Peking (Beijing). A modern copy print made by the Billie Love Historical Collection. It is thought that the original photograph was once owned by John Barr Affleck (1878-1941), H.B.M. Consul-General at Tianjin, and later belonged to his son John Proctor Affleck (1930-2004) and his wife Elaine. The caption on the back of the copy print was written by the Billie Love Historical Collection and is thought to be a transcription of the original captioning. See JC-s298.
