Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: BL-s223. Photograph by Sanshichiro Yamamoto. The caption on the back of this modern print was written by Billie Love Historical Collection. This image was reproduced in 'Foreigners Within the Gates' by Michael J. Moser and Yeone Wei-Chih Moser (Oxford University Press, 1993), on page 35, and (incorrectly) captioned: ‘Chinese officials travelling in style. This large sedan-chair is parked outside the British Legation alongside the Imperial Canal. Its owner was probably an official of the Zongli Yamen on a formal visit to HM's Minister in Peking’. The 'Jade River Canal' is now Zhengyi Lu. See BL-n075.
