Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Bo02-047. Am = American. The handwritten caption (43. Am. Baptist Mission house and Dr Parker’s Hospital, Man of War Reach, Ningpo) on a list in the album is incorrect. It may refer to another photograph, which is not pasted in the album. Bo02-047 is reproduced in The Face of China 1860-1912 by L. Carrington Goodrich and Nigel Cameron, p110, with the caption 'Thomas Childe: Cityscape, c1877'. This is not a photograph by Thomas Child. Bo02-047 is also reproduced in History of Photography in China 1861-1879 by Terry Bennett (page 152): Photograph by Major J.C. Watson, entitled 'The City of Yu-Yan'. Yu-Yan (余姚 Yuyao) is a city 40 km from Ningpo (Ningbo) in Chechiang (Zhejiang province). Photograph shows Tongji Bridge and Yaojiang River - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tongji_Bridge_(Yuyao).
