Notes
University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Bo02-101. (Picture No 16 is not of an honorary portal/pailou). The pailou was perhaps in Ningbo? The honour was bestowed on a widow, who remained ‘faithful’ to her deceased husband to the end of her life. This was a common practice in imperial China to encourage stable family and society.
