Hopchun, a tea merchant, with a tea bowl and a tea plant

Hopchun, a tea merchant, with a tea bowl and a tea plant

Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Fr01-046. Note the uncut fingernails on the Hopchun's left hand, signifying that he did not do manual work. Photograph very tentatively attributed to Lai Fong (Afong Studio), as suggested by the number written in pencil on the album page (30). See the Lai Fong (Afong Studio) number lists in 'History of Photography in China, Chinese Photographers 1844-1879' by Terry Bennett (Quaritch 2013), page 312. The tree in the background could be 'Camellia sinensis' (tea plant), or perhaps a citrus? See Fr01-047, which is a detail from Fr01-046.
