Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: GA01-065.   Captain George Turnour Horton Atchison was in China serving with the 67th (South Hampshire) Regiment of Foot and was Deputy Assistant Quarter-Master General to the troops in north China.  He was present at the capture of the Taku Forts and the campaign of 1860 (Second Opium War).  Atchison died at Tientsin (Tianjin) on 21 July 1861, aged 28.   Written in ink to the right of the centre of the back of this photograph, which is mounted on card, is: "X Lt Turner Atchison - 67th Regt".  The X should indicate which of the graves in the photograph is Atchison's.  But no X is marked on the front of the photograph.  It is not clear which of the graves is indicated.  Most likely Atchison's grave was marked by one of the upright slab gravestones in the middle area of this photograph.  There was a monument to Atchison in St. Paul's Church in Dorking, Surrey, England.  Tientsin (Tianjin) city wall and a gate entrance is in the background.
