University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Pa01-24. A hawser-maker at work on his raised working platform. These bamboo structures had a height of 12 metres or more, so that the hawser maker could use gravity to plait a straight hawser and need not work against the stiffness of the bamboo strips. The thin rope extending downwards is the finished hawser. Hawsers were used by trackers to haul boats along rivers. See Ba05-120, CP-s011 and El01-49.
