A photograph of the two figures was published on page 32 of Revd Charles Darwent’s Shanghai guidebook (‘Shanghai: a handbook for travellers and residents to the chief objects of interest in and around the foreign settlement and native city’). Darwent describes the figures as two of the four brothers, or four heavenly kings, or four diamonds.
