University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Pe01-038. This photograph was taken at the execution ground at Caishikou (菜市口), Peking (Beijing). Lingchi ('Death by ten thousand cuts') was a most feared punishment, carried out while the miscreant was still alive, for treason and serious crimes against the family. See Pe01-034 and Pe01-035.
