This photograph is thought to depict David Bolam, who trained in South Shields, England, and served at sea including runs from New Zealand to UK. His career with the Chinese Maritime Customs Service began in 1924. During the war he was interned and tortured by the Japanese. Bolam withdrew from the CMCS in 1947.
