Emily Elizabeth Vacher was born in Shanghai on 17 August 1856. The woman is wearing a thimble (which looks like a ring) on a finger on her right hand. See VH02-020 (another print from the same negative, with captioning to the effect that this woman, who had been Emily Vacher's amah, was now Mrs Brown's amah).
