Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: VH01-054. Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution reference: L03826-024b. Xue Huan 薛煥, a native of Sichuan province, served as Daotai from 1857 to 1859. Photograph by William Jocelyn, taken at the British Consulate, Shanghai. It seems that the date in the caption in the album (April 1858) is wrong. A wood engraving of this image (flipped) was published in 1859 in Narrative of the Earl of Elgin's Mission to China and Japan by Laurence Oliphant - see ‘History of Photography in China 1842-1860’ by Terry Bennett, page 136. This photograph is reproduced in ‘History of Photography in China 1842-1860’ by Terry Bennett, on page 128. See VH02-189 (another print).
