Stokes edition of ‘My Lady of the Chinese Courtyard’ by Elizabeth Cooper (1914), opposite page 44, and captioned ‘We put our money in the great burner’. It is thought that the photograph was taken by Donald Mennie, a boat ride away from Shanghai.
