Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: ML06-d046. The Dixie Mission (United States Army Observation Group), 1944. On the far right: Brooke Dolan II (1908-1945), an American adventurer and naturalist. In the background is a basketball hoop net. A variant of this image was reproduced in ‘Dixie Mission: The United States Army Observer Group in Yenan, 1944’ by David D. Barrett (China Research Monographs, University of California, September 1970) and captioned: “To show the success of their production drive (and perhaps also hoping that we would be less conspicuous in forward areas), the Communists presented the Mission with ‘Chung-shan’ suits of heavy native homespun. (L. to r.) Ludden, Jones, Stelle, Gress, Domke, Nakamura, Cromley, Barrett, Dole, Service, Peterkin, Remeneh, Hitch, Whittlesey, Colling, Dolan. Absent: Foss, Casberg. My own opinion was that we looked like a Welsh coalminers choir, but not a very good one.”
