This photograph was taken from Chongwenmen (崇文門), the shadow of which falls in the foreground. The building on the left is the Methodist Hospital, also known as the Hopkins Memorial Hospital, run by American missionaries. The hospital is now the Tongren Hospital (同仁医院). In the foreground on the left is the German recreation grounds/drill field. In the distance, along Hatamen Street, is the Ketteler Memorial.
