Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Os03-047. Photo from an album (UoB reference Os03) kept in the School of Oriental and African Studies Archives, London (SOAS reference MS 380 876/3). This photograph was most probably taken after executions of prisoners, including pirates, on either 17 April or 11 May 1891, at Kowloon, Hong Kong. Some of the pirates executed by the Chinese authorities on those occasions were the men who had seized the steamer 'Namoa' on 10 December 1890 as it steamed from Hong Kong. The pirates killed the captain, one crew member and one passenger, a Chinese Customs lightkeeper, and plundered the ship. See also Pe01-004 and DH-s138 and Wr-s095.
