The Pazhou Pagoda (Whampoa Pagoda) and Haitang Temple, Guangzhou

Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: RH01-03. Royal Hampshire Regiment Museum reference: M890.88.  This photograph is from an album of photographs collected together by Colonel John Eyles Blundell, documenting his military career.  Additional annotation in the album in pen, by Lt Col C.D. Darroch, Regimental Secretary/Curator and latterly Archivist: Connect with transcript of Diary. Pages 14/15 29th May.  The caption on the album page is incorrect - the pagoda is not in Fuzhou. This is a photograph of the Pazhou Pagoda or Tower (also known as Whampoa Pagoda) in Weizhou (now Xingang East Road), Haizhu District, Guangzhou (Canton), near the Pearl River. The building is an octagonal, pavilion-style pagoda, with blue-brick masonry.  It has a nine-story appearance, with seventeen floors and is fifty metres high. Next to the pagoda, in the foreground, is the Haitang Temple, which was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution.
