In ‘Laughing Diplomat’ (1938), page 316, Daniele Varè describes Yichang and the Chinese characters dug into the soil on the hillside and painted white in c.1910. An advertisement for tonic pills could also mean the prophetic ‘Qing (dynasty) soon to end’.
