Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Wr-s044. Real photo post card. Characters on the wooden sign in the foreground: 聼審 ting shen (which can be translated as: court hearing). The characters on the clothes of the turbanned men on the left and right sides of the table are: 親兵 (qinbing, meaning the bodyguard of a senior official). The 'senior official' is probably the man sitting in the centre.
