University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Bk10-02. This image was copied from a frontispiece portrait in a biography by Mrs Bryson entitled 'John Kenneth MacKenzie – Medical Missionary to China', published in 1891. John Kenneth MacKenzie started the first real medical school in China - which was also a hospital (later the MacKenzie Memorial Hospital) - in Tientsin (Tianjin), and was physician to Li Hongzhang. MacKenzie was a student at Bristol Medical School, England, from 1870 to 1874.
