Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Bo01-083. The Bronze Pagoda (Pavilion of Precious Clouds) was made entirely of cast bronze in 1755. It survived the 1860 burning. In this 1870s photograph, one can see the ‘steps piled with bricks and bushes to keep off pilferers of the valuable material’ (‘Chinese Art’ by S. W. Bushell, Victoria and Albert Museum handbook, page 52). The doors and windows were looted following the Boxer Uprising, but purchased and donated back to the Summer Palace in the 1980s. Photograph by Charles Frederick Moore. See also Bk04-02 and Bk04-35.
