Darwent, Minister of the Union Church, was also a photographer and the author of a photographer-friendly guidebook to Shanghai: "Shanghai: a handbook for travellers and residents to the chief objects of interest in and around the foreign settlement and native city" (1904). https://archive.org/details/cu31924023217825. This view is 'from Boat House'. The Boat House was beside the creek, near the junction of Soochow Road (Nansuzhou Lu) with Yuen Ming Yuen Road (Yuanmingyuan Lu). In the background, left to right: Hongkew Clinic, Deutsche Evangelische Church, German Consulate.
