Darwent, Charles Collection
The Revd. Charles Ewart Darwent (1858-1924), Minister of the Union Church, Shanghai from 1899 to 1919, was also an author and photographer. Darwent was a founding member and first chairman of the Shanghai Amateur Photographic Society (S.A.P.S.) and wrote the photographer-friendly guidebook Shanghai: a handbook for travellers and residents to the chief objects of interest in and around the foreign settlement and native city (c.1904). Bk06-01 is a portrait of him. The thirty-six images in the Charles Darwent Collection are from an album of photographs taken by him in and around Shanghai, c.1902. HPC ref: Da01.
