Underground Communist Party activists and trades union militia had seized control of parts of Shanghai in late March 1927. Within weeks, they were betrayed by their estwhile allies, led by Chiang Kai-shek, and massacred. See JM01-068 for another from this series. See also a near-identical photograph, taken possibly just seconds earlier by the same photographer on the Virtual Shanghai platform. Other photographs of the demonstration, held in the French Foreign Ministry Archives, can also be found in Virtual Shanghai. We are grateful to Katya Knyazeva for identifying the date and location.
