University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: LP01-65. No caption in the album for this photograph. The slogans on each side of the city gate ‘進取’ (enterprising / progressive) and ‘愛群’ (love community), were two of the main aspects of the thoughts of the warlord Yan Xishan (閻錫山 Yen Hsi-shan) (1883-1960). The gateway might be a city gate in Shanxi (Shansi) Province. See LP01-31, LP01-61 and LP01-64.
