Views of Hong Kong from the 1860s to the 1920s' (CO 1069-446). Photograph by John Thomson. HMS Galatea was a steam frigate built in 1859. In 1867-68, the Prince Alfred, HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, commanded the ship on a world cruise. Prince Alfred was the first British prince to visit Hong Kong. In this photograph, HMS Galatea is at anchor off Peddar's Wharf, guarded by lines of merchant boats and smaller vessels. This photograph was published in Thomson's Illustrations of China and Its People. See NA16-006.
