The Summer Palace area was looted and burnt down by British and French forces in 1860 in response to the torture and death of hostages. This photograph depicts the scant remains of Paiyundian (Hall of Dispelling Clouds 排云殿), trees which died after being burnt, and weeds. In the background is the Revolving Archive (转轮藏 Zhuanlun Zang) and Emperor Qianlong’s stele on Longevity Hill (万寿山).
