Photograph taken on 19 September 1914, during the departure from Tianjin of the 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers, on ss Shuntien, bound for Qingdao. The 2nd Battalion The South Wales Borderers, along with a detachment of the 36th Sikhs, formed the bulk of the British troops which were sent to assist the Japanese in capturing Germany's naval base at Qingdao (Tsingtao) in China.
